My brother and cousin building a scalextric track around the whole of the sitting room and dining room one year.
The scalextric race car system was first produced in 1952 - the name comes from scalex + electric.
It's the closest you could get to racing real cars around a racing track at high speed. Plus you could create a long and dangerous track - and it didn't matter how many times the car flew off as they whizzed around the corners.
We used to shift furniture around - much to the annoyance of our parents - in order to create the longest run possible before creating a sharp turn around the corner.
You basically had two types of game. The sedentary skill-based version where you just didn't want to have to get up off your bottom to pick up an abandoned car which had skipped off the tracks. The skill came in slowing down enough before the corner and speeding up on the turn. Then there was the reckless high speed high engagement version where you were forever hopping up and down to collect abandoned cars but it didn't matter because flipping those cars arouns the track and having them spin off was such good fun.
