Hanworth War Memorial

Hanworth War Memorial school research project

Hanworth War Memorial

Year 6 boys from five primary schools in and around Hanworth are researching the lives and deaths of the men whose names appear on Hanworth's war memorial. Our first job was to visit and record the names on the memorial of those men who had died in the First World War.

The Post Mistress Who Was a Spy

The Strange (and false) story about the post mistress who was a spy

I loved the idea of this story. Apparently this elderly post mistress would pass messages and directions to new arrivals ready for thier underground spy training at Coleshill during the Second World War. Unfortunately it turns out not to be true. Still, it's a lovely story.

The Women of WWII Memorial

A Long Time Coming

This memorial was recently put in place to honor the women that served the country proudly.

The memorial has endured some controversy. Some think it portrays women as subservient. Others have a problem with the lack of a female presence in a memorial meant to honour women.

I was shown this during a complimentary walking tour provided by EUSA. Liz, our guide was extremely friendly and knowledgeable. She said she understood why people had issue with the monument, but she personally found it fitting.
