Attacked by crows on Blackheath...

A humorous memory about growing up in Blackheath

It was a lovely sunny day, so I decided it would be nice to have a picnic on Blackheath, just opposite the house where I grew up. Being an only child I was on my own, but quite content in my own company. So there I was, enjoying the large expanse of grass.. the blue sky.. the odd butterfly, and the sandwich wasn't bad either. I had almost finished what had been a pleasant hour when I became very suddenly aware that I was completely surrounded by large black crows. There is a community of crows on the heath, I had become quite fond of them, and used to imitate their calls on the way to school in the morning. That day they turned on me... I stood up and in a scene reminiscent of 'The Birds' fled home as fast as I could with the crows in pursuit of me and my lunch. I have never quite trusted them since...

1947 Signal Hill Capetown

1947 Royal Visit to Cape Town

Royal family visit to Capetown in 1947

In 1947 I was a small girl at a primary school called 'Kings Road School' in Capetown. The royal family came into Table Bay on the HMS Vanguard to pay a visit to South Africa. On board was our present Queen who was then Princess Elizabeth. She celebrated her 21sth birthday in Capetown. We climbed Signal Hill dressed in our brown uniforms and white panama hats and stood in a line to form the word WELCOME.

BORDER REIVERS

We visited border reiver country and discovered a beautiful countryisde with a violent past

We visited border reiver country and discovered a beautiful countryisde with a violent past. All of the area around Hawick and Jedburgh has the most fantastic history. It was once a rough and violent area with clans fighting clans. We visited the area in 2005 and discovered that you can still find the pele towers built to defend families from attack. It's stunning.

Grady's Cottage Murrisk, Co. Mayo

Horse and cart outside Grady's cottage in Murrisk, Co. Mayo, Ireland

This is a photo of a horse and cart outside my Grandad's family's cottage in Murrisk, near Westport, County Mayo in Ireland. The Grady family built the cottage in the early twentieth century at the foot of Croagh Patrick Mountain and dug a water main from the mountain spring to the cottage. The old part of the cottage is now a barn and a newer cottage was built as a replacement later in the twentieth century

What a view

The Southbank

My Favourite Place In London

This is the Southbank of the River Thames. It's lovely here and the only place I go where I don't feel like I have to have a destination once I get there.
