Early days at Quarry Bank Mill

I remember travelling in the Guard's van on the train from Gatley with my mother. She would take her bicycle and I would ride on my 3-wheeler through Styal village and then into Styal Woods where we would pick blackberries on the slopes above Quarry Bank Mill. The mill was silent and empty and, as far as I can remember, we very rarely saw anyone else in the woods.

My friend's grandmother lived next to the farm opposite the lane from The Ship Inn and my friend and I would help in the dairy by putting the waxed caps on the filled milk bottles ready for delivery.

Although its on a different theme, one of our neighbours had milk delivered by pony and trap. The churns were fixed to the outside of the trap and the milk was measured out into a jug by using long-handled dippers (like the ones we used at school to learn "capacities") We boys used to wait at the bottom of our road so that we could all pile into the trap for a ride up the road to our neighbours' house!
